On 7 July 2025, Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey announced about his new launch Bitchat , a new messaging app, describing it as a "Bluetooth chat app" that works without internet or any cellular connection.
Bitchat is an offline encrypted messaging app that uses Bluetooth networks, for direct device-to-device communication. It Emphasizes on privacy, simplicity and advocacy of Dorsey for decentralized technologies. It is ideal for scenarios like concerts, remote areas or situations where internet access is limited or undesirable.
This app has a simple interface which focuses on text-based messaging without requiring your personal data. Messages are encrypted to ensure data privacy and it's currently available on iOS in testing version. After launching beta version users report some security concerns in bitchat like broken identity authentication which could compromise privacy.
Dorsey declared bitchat as a tool for privacy conscious users that reduce reliance on centralized infrastructure. Bitchat uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) mesh networks which create a "chain reaction" of device connections such as:
Device A connects to Device B (within 10-100 meters). Device B relays messages to Device C. Messages can travel through multiple “hops” No internet or cellular connection required
however, this app has some Limitations like Range constraints which is typically 10-100 meters per connection. it has some Speed issues like Message delivery can be slow with multiple hops, Network density that Requires sufficient nearby devices and Battery consumption.
While Dorsey positions Bitchat as an alternative to mainstream apps like WhatsApp, it more directly competes with offline messaging solutions such as Briar and FireChat. Bitchat differentiates itself with complete independence from internet connectivity and an account-free model, increasing its appeal to privacy-conscious users.
As Bitchat remains in its beta phase, it continues to encounter bugs and security challenges. Nevertheless, Dorsey is actively engaging with user feedback and promises future updates. However, no formal roadmap has been shared regarding the release of a stable version.
Jack Dorsey's Bitchat marks a significant step forward in the world of offline messaging apps. Its focus on privacy, simplicity, and communication without reliance on centralized infrastructure signals a compelling new direction under Dorsey's leadership. While there are challenges to address, Bitchat represents the evolving landscape of messaging technology, where user privacy and decentralization are paramount.
